Biomimicry Bowls: Following Nature's design plans
Project Description:
You will create a series of three wheel-thrown nesting bowls that mirror a natural process or object through their formal characteristics including form, surface design, and color. Consider the rim and the inside curve and foot of each bowl. The bowls can be the same size or be of varying sizes, but must fit within each other.
Inquiry Questions:
____/30 Planning and ideation:
Project page includes multiple images that document process and thinking. Include the following:
2. Why did you choose this process? What about it is interesting to you?
3. How does the form, surface design, and/or color of your bowls communicate this natural process to the viewer?
4. How did your idea change throughout the process of designing and creating your nesting bowls?
5. What challenges did you face in planning or creating your bowls and how did you overcome them?

Project Description:
You will create a series of three wheel-thrown nesting bowls that mirror a natural process or object through their formal characteristics including form, surface design, and color. Consider the rim and the inside curve and foot of each bowl. The bowls can be the same size or be of varying sizes, but must fit within each other.
Inquiry Questions:
- What is biomimicry?
- How can hand-crafted objects reflect the characteristics of natural processes or objects?
- How can natural processes or objects inspire works of art?
- How can the radial symmetry found in nature inform the design of a set of nesting bowls?
____/30 Planning and ideation:
- 10 images of natural processes and objects added to your project page. Five sketches of these natural processes or objects in your sketchbook and uploaded to your project page.
- Identify the purpose your bowls will serve. Ice Cream bowls? Cereal bowls? Serving bowls? Other?
- Student fully explored design possibilities through a minimum of 5 different bowl designs. (in sketchbook and posted on your project page) Include the foot, surface treatment, shape of bowl and rim.
- Student has a form and foot in mind when beginning to throw on the wheel.
- Are the techniques realized within the piece and executed to a level that is appropriate to the work? Did the student fulfill all requirements including:
- Successfully demonstrate the ability to throw the bowl form.
- Consider the foot of the bowl – this can be trimmed on the wheel or by hand, or you could throw/hand-build a separate foot and attach it.
- Maintain proper moisture content leading to successful firing. Work dries completely without major cracking.
- Final vessel is functional (comfortable to hold and includes usable space)
- Successfully experiment with and apply glazes.
Project page includes multiple images that document process and thinking. Include the following:
- Images of 10 natural processes or objects
- 5 sketches of natural processes or objects
- 3 completed sketches of nesting bowls inspired by natural processes
- Images of works in progress
- Images of greenware pieces
- Images of your final products
- Images should be accompanied by descriptions of thinking and problem-solving throughout the process.
- An artist statement answering the following questions:
_____/10 Studio Habits
- Persistence and effective use of class time is always demonstrated.
- Materials are always properly used and cared for.
- Work area is always cleaned up at the end of each studio session.
- Come prepared with all needed supplies. (i.e. Sketchbook, laptop, other items as requested)
- Participate in class discussions in a thoughtful way.
