O'Dea Elementary Core Knowlege Setting and Context:
O'Dea Elementary prides its commitment to community involvement through a parent-teacher partnership centered around an active PTA and parent advisory board. Academics center around Core Knowledge curriculum encouraging students to develop in all areas of education and as well-rounded humans and collaborative thinkers and problem solvers. To maintain an inclusive environment where diverse student's needs are met, enrichment blocks for students needing extra assistance and those needing opportunities for extension are included in every day instruction. O'Dea is a "Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support" school which encourages positive and enriching experiences among students and staff and is supported by a staff Wellness Team.
Mrs King’s Art classroom is an environment of compassion and acceptance that centers around Teaching for Artistic Behavior (TAB). Rather than ask students to simply follow directions in teacher-directed art projects, TAB gives students the knowledge to utilize artistic tools, mediums and techniques within studios including painting, drawing, printmaking, fibers, architecture, collage, and sculpture. The purpose of Teaching for Artistic Behavior is to facilitate students in becoming independent thinkers comfortable with the ambiguity of their ideas, confident enough to express them visually and knowledgeable enough to choose the appropriate medium, solve problems creatively in the process and create a final product that communicates their ideas. The choice incorporated into ideation, process, and product allows students to take responsibility for their learning and truly think and work like artists. The teacher’s role here is to act as a facilitator of artistic ideas and creation rather than a disciplinarian or materials manager.
