Opposites Attract: Jewelry Lesson #2
Project Description:
For this project you will be designing and fabricating a pair of pendants or pair of earrings that visually represent a dichotomy . A dichotomy is a pair of opposing ideas or things that are entirely different. Your pendants or earrings should reflect the characteristics of each part of your dichotomy including their differences and similarities.
Learning Targets: I Will Be Able To:
Option #1: Create a pair of pendants or earrings that consists of a piece of jewelry representing each individual side of the dichotomy (for example an earring representing love and an earring representing hate.)
Option #2: Create a pair of pendants or earrings where each piece of jewelry represents a combination of the sides of the dichotomy (for example, two earrings that combine the concepts of love and hate on one piece of jewelry.)
Grading Criteria:
___/30 Ideation and Planning
1. What dichotomy did you choose to represent in your final artwork?
2. Why did you choose this dichotomy? Why is it personally important to you? Why did you find it interesting enough to make a work of art about it?
3. How did you use form, imagery, shape, line, or color to represent your dichotomy in your jewelry?
4. What was your biggest challenge in creating this work of art? How did you overcome this challenge? Think about the whole process of creating this work: planning and ideation, acquisition of new skills such as enameling and soldering, etc.)

- Ideation: Generate ideas and develop sketches that inform my final work of art exploring two opposing ideas or things.
- Creation: Visually represent opposing concepts using the elements and principles of visual art including and not limited to: line, shape, balance, symmetry, texture, color, contrast, etc.
- Application: Build on previously learned metalsmithing skills of sawing, filing, sanding, riveting, patina, creating jump rings and metal findings and develop the new skill of enameling.
- Reflection: Reflect on, analyze, and evaluate my artistic choices and final work of art verbally and in written form.
- Documentation: Document the planning, process, and product of my artwork in a digital sketchbook/portfolio.
- What is a dichotomy? How do artists use the elements and principles of visual art to explore and express dichotomies?
- How can creating art about two opposing ideas or things lead to a deeper understanding of their conceptual and visual relationships?
- How can opposites be inherently different yet complement each other conceptually and visually?
Option #1: Create a pair of pendants or earrings that consists of a piece of jewelry representing each individual side of the dichotomy (for example an earring representing love and an earring representing hate.)
Option #2: Create a pair of pendants or earrings where each piece of jewelry represents a combination of the sides of the dichotomy (for example, two earrings that combine the concepts of love and hate on one piece of jewelry.)
Grading Criteria:
___/30 Ideation and Planning
- I have thoughtfully completed the "Opposites Attract" playsheet to brainstorm dichotomies and imagery to represent them.
- I participated in the group discussion about opposites in art and the brainstorming session generating ideas for dichotomies.
- I planned my final design using a paper model.
- I completed three practice enamel pieces and recorded my process in my enameling log.
- I have used the skills of sawing, piercing, drilling riveting, sanding/finishing, and enameling to create a wearable work of art.
- I have accounted for the project requirements (listed above under "requirements") in the planning and application of my design.
- I have used the artistic elements such as line, shape, color, texture, etc to visually represent my dichotomy. I have made visual connections that show the similarities and differences between my opposing ideas or things.
- I have built a page in my jewelry collection that includes my written brainstorming, and documents creative problem solving throughout my process. This includes images of at least 3 sketches of my final design, 2 paper models, an enameling log, works in progress, and final products.
- I can reflect verbally and in written form about my artistic choices, process, and design characteristics:
_____/10 Studio Habits
- I have always demonstrated persistence and effective use of class time.
- I am on time everyday and ready to work.
- I always properly use and care for my materials and tools.
- My work area is always cleaned up at the end of each studio session.
- I always come prepared with all needed supplies. (i.e. Sketchbook, laptop, models)
- I participate in class discussions in a thoughtful way.
This student chose to represent the dichotomy of small and big. The concept was simple, yet she chose two very sophisticated designs to represent her idea.
This student chose to show the dichotomy of air and land as well as geometric and organic. Her design uses color and shape to highlight the differences between her chosen concept.
