Project Description:
The Fort Collins Art Association is holding a community dinner to raise awareness about important social issues. You have been asked to design a platter which will visually represent issues important to you in order to catalyze a conversation about difficult topics. You will use surface design techniques including glazing, texture application, stencils, and stamps to create a story about social justice on your platter.
Inquiry Questions:

What?: What social issue have you chosen to investigate?
Why?: Why is this issue important to you? (personal experience, etc) Why should it be important to everyone in society?
Where?: Where in the world is most affected by this social issue?
When?: What time period has this issue been most prevalent in? Does it span time periods?
Who?: Who are the main figures associated with this issue on both sides? Who are the people negatively affected by this issue? Are there any figures who are known for being involved with this issue? (ex Martin Luther King with Civil Rights.)
Use the answers to these questions to inform the imagery, surface design, and form of your platter.

- What is social justice? How does it affect you? How does it affect the world society?
- How can a crafted object spark awareness of historical or current social issues?
- List 5-8 social issues that are important to you and why
- How can art catalyze meaningful conversations and deeper understanding about important social issues?
- Ideation: Develop opinions about important social issues and gain a deeper understanding of the difficulties facing our world society.
- Planning: Conduct research about personally meaningful social issues that will inform their final work of art
- Application of Media: Explore and Apply skills of ceramic surface design including carving, stamping, textures, glazes and press molds.
- Creation: Create artwork that raises awareness and catalyzes conversations about important social issues.
- Documentation: Record my ideation, process, works in progress, and final product on my online portfolio.
- Reflection: Create an artist statement that reflects on my final work of art and my ideas surrounding social justice.

- I have used the techniques of texture application, carving, stenciling, stamping and glazing to create a platter that raises awareness about my chosen social issue. Exploration of new techniques is documented in my digital sketchbook.
- I have used the artistic elements such as line, shape, color, texture, etc to visually represent my social issue.
- I have used creative problem solving to overcome any artistic issues I had in the process of creating my vessel. This is documented in my digital portfolio.
- I have built a page in my pottery collection that documents creative problem solving throughout my process. This includes images of 4-5 sketches, clay technique explorations, greenware, bisquware and final product accompanied by descriptions of my planning, works in progress, as well as answer to the research questions I used to plan my final piece.
- I can reflect verbally and in written form about my artistic choices, process, and design characteristics.
- I have always demonstrated persistence and effective use of class time.
- I always properly use and care for my materials and tools.
- My work area is always cleaned up at the end of each studio session.
- I always come prepared with all needed supplies. (i.e. Sketchbook, laptop, models)
- I participate in class discussions in a thoughtful way.
