Rocky Mountain High School Settings and Context:
Rocky Mountain High School prides itself on its inclusive and safe environment cultivated through upwards of 70 student organizations, clubs, and interscholastic opportunities. The school's mission statement focuses on the staff and student's recognition of their individual and group sense of self, purpose and place as they encourage students to become well rounded and empathetic young people ready to navigate their place in the world. They have an advanced placement and integrated services programs to meet the needs of their diverse population of students and are committed to building a community of learners and parents that support each other.
I had the privilege of working with Mrs. Laura Cronen at RMHS in her pottery and Intro to 2D design classes this semester. My experience and Mrs. Cronen’s feedback have helped me develop in many areas including classroom management, scaffolding and differentiation of instruction, and standards-based lesson planning. My biggest takeaway from this semester has been the ability to see the philosophical underpinnings of the subjects I teach. Working with high school aged students has enabled me to create intellectually and technically challenging lessons that teach artistic behavior. I felt that especially in 2D design, I have been able to see how our lessons and drawing activities have scaffolded the attainment of artistic skills in our students allowing them to feel confident in their abilities to depict the natural world.
